Science-fiction is not so bad after all. Given that I could manage to finish this book and Time Machine (well, despite the fact that they are part of school assigment) that is such big achievements for me already. Things going on in 1. Ford’s reason staying on the planet Earth. Ford comes to the planet Earth just to do his research on a hope it would lead him to write a more recent version of a book called “The Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Galaxy” 2. Planet Earth exploded and Ford being a good friend to Arthur, who is an Earthman, decided to save him and bring him to travel to other planet. There was also a moment of confession. Arthur didn’t know that Ford was not a real Earth man. 3. Along the road, or to be precise on the ship named “The Heart of Gold,” Arthur and Ford met with Eddy (a depressed robot that is very sensitive with words like life, universe etc), Zaphod (A strange person who is very complicated; at certain time he ca be very smart but most of the time he is just a slow thinker), Trillian (apparently the only female character we have, I am not sure what’s her relationship with Zaphod but I think they have love interest). It happens that Ford and Zapod are cousins, this makes the two friends’ journey easier, because before they go into a little bit of trouble. 4. These people naturally formed into a group. They make the journey together. And, one of the places they ended up going together to is planet Magrathea. For Ford and Zaphod this is a mythical planet which their parents used to tell them when they were kids. 5. In this planet Arthur met Slatibartfast, who is actually the engeneer of all planet, even planet earth was created by him. But of course it was commisioned by the mice, the most intelligent creator in the whole universe. They deliberately made Earth to answer the grand universal questions: who we are? Why are we here? Etc. Previously they had tried to create a robot, Deep Thought, to answere this question. But after 7.5 million, the time DT needs to think about the answer, he came up with an answer which is 42! Having no sense at all with this question, thus motivates the mices to create Earth. At the end, failed both to answer the question they, the mice (Benji and Frenkie) decided to invent a question instead to the ready answer: 42. After a little chit and chat they finally agree with “how many roads must a man walk down?” fort he question. 6. The original planet Earth, as we know, was exploded by some monsters. But it is acually on the process of remaking. Slatibartfast claimed that he still owns the blueprint. So it would not be a big problem at all. Again, this is still commissioned by the mices. 7. Now that the mices found a real Earthman, Arthur, they decided to call off the remaking planet Earth. Remember, the only reason to make planet Earth is to answer the grand question. Now the mices came up with a new option to answer the grand questions – by reading Arthur’s brain. One of the mices claims that he could read the brain but has to take the brain out of Arthur’s head. Unwilling to trade his brain, Arthur and friends run away. Shortly, they succeeded and back on the Heart of Gold |
